ERPNext Customisation in Ireland

Standard ERPNext covers a lot, but every Irish business has a process that does not fit the default screens. We build those differences on the Frappe Framework as separate custom apps, with their own doctypes, scripts, reports and integrations, so your changes survive version upgrades and stay readable to the next developer who opens them.

Overview

Customising ERPNext without breaking upgrades

The quickest way to ruin an ERPNext site is to edit core files. It works for a week, then the next upgrade overwrites the change or fails halfway through. We never touch ERPNext or Frappe source. Instead every change lives in one of three places: settings made through Customize Form, a client or server script for light logic, or a custom app under version control for anything substantial.

Choosing the right level matters. A new field on the sales order needs no code at all. A rule that blocks delivery when a customer is over their credit limit is a short server script. A complete subcontractor register with its own approval flow, reports and ROS-ready figures belongs in a custom app with tests. We explain which route we propose, and why, before writing anything.

What you get

What we build on the Frappe Framework

Custom doctypes and apps

New business objects, such as inspection logs, rental contracts or subcontract registers, built as doctypes inside a custom app with permissions, naming rules, list views and links to standard ERPNext records.

Client and server scripts

Validation, default values, calculated fields and automatic follow-up documents written in Python and JavaScript through Frappe hooks, so the rules run every time a document is saved, submitted or cancelled.

Print formats in Jinja

Invoices, delivery dockets, certificates and statements designed in HTML and Jinja, carrying your branding, a VAT breakdown by rate and any wording your customers or auditors expect to find on the page.

Script and query reports

Reports that standard ERPNext lacks, written as script reports with filters, totals and drill-down, from VAT summaries by rate to stock ageing by batch or gross margin by sales representative.

Integrations through the API

We connect ERPNext with web shops, bank statement files, shipping carriers, payroll packages and your own systems using the Frappe REST API, webhooks and scheduled jobs, with every error logged for review.

Version control and testing

Every custom app sits in a Git repository you own, with automated tests for key logic and a staging site where changes are approved before they are deployed to production.

Irish requirements we often build for

TopicThe Irish ruleWhat we set up
VAT3 reportIrish VAT-registered businesses usually file a VAT3 return every two months on ROS, reporting VAT on sales and VAT on purchases for the period. We write a script report that maps each tax account and template to the return's boxes, totals them by period and links every figure back to its source invoices for checking.
Relevant Contracts TaxPrincipal contractors in construction, forestry and meat processing operate RCT through eRCT on ROS, deducting 0%, 20% or 35% from subcontractor payments as Revenue directs.A custom app records subcontracts, payment notifications and the rate Revenue confirms, posts deductions to a liability account and produces a monthly summary. It does not file with Revenue directly.
E-invoicing groundworkRevenue has announced a phased move to B2B e-invoicing for Irish businesses, aligned with the EU's VAT in the Digital Age package. We keep invoice data structured and complete, and design custom apps so that a structured e-invoice export can be added as a module once the Irish format is confirmed.
Data subject requestsUnder GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, people can ask what personal data you hold about them, and the Data Protection Commission enforces those rights in Ireland.A small custom tool gathers one person's records across contacts, leads, customers and employees into a single export, and can anonymise records you no longer need to keep.

We configure the system and check it against your accountant’s figures; we are not tax advisers, and your accountant files the returns. Last reviewed 24 October 2026.

How it runs

How a customisation request is delivered

1

Requirement note

You describe the problem in business terms. We write it back as a short requirement note with examples, so both sides agree on what done looks like before estimating.

2

Technical design

We choose between configuration, a script or a custom app, list the doctypes and hooks involved, and give a fixed estimate for the agreed design.

3

Build in sprints

Development happens in short sprints against a staging copy of your site, with a demo at the end of each sprint so you can steer early.

4

Test on staging

Automated tests cover the core logic, and your users test real cases on staging. We also run the change against the next ERPNext version where one is due.

5

Deploy and document

The approved release is deployed to production in a quiet window, and a short technical note plus a user guide is added to your repository and knowledge base.

FAQ

ERPNext Customisation in Ireland: questions answered

Will customisations break when ERPNext is upgraded?
Customisations built the right way rarely break. Because we never edit core files, an upgrade replaces ERPNext and Frappe while your custom app stays put. Occasionally an upstream change affects a hook or field we depend on, which is why we test every custom app on staging against the new version before production is touched.
Who owns the code you write?
You do. Custom apps live in a Git repository under your account. ERPNext is licensed under GPLv3, so if you distribute an app built on it to other organisations, the same licence terms apply to that app. Software used only inside your own business does not have to be published.
Can you customise a site another developer built?
Yes. We start with a code review to understand what exists, flag anything that edits core files or blocks upgrades, and agree a plan to tidy it. Often we move scattered server scripts into a proper custom app first, so new work rests on a stable base.
Should we use Server Scripts or a custom app?
Server Scripts are handy for small rules that an administrator might adjust, and they need no deployment. Anything longer, anything with its own doctypes, or anything that needs tests belongs in a custom app under version control. We usually start light and move logic into an app as it grows.
Can ERPNext connect to our Shopify or WooCommerce store?
Usually, yes. Frappe publishes an e-commerce integrations app that covers Shopify, and WooCommerce connectors for ERPNext are available. Where those do not match your workflow, or you use another platform, we build a connector on the REST API that syncs orders, customers, stock and prices on a schedule.
Do you document what you build?
Every release includes a short technical note in the repository describing doctypes, hooks and settings, plus a plain-language guide for users. If another developer or your own staff take over later, they can understand and extend the custom app without needing to call us first.
