Overview

Odoo vs Sage in Ireland

Odoo vs Sage: the short version is that Sage is accounting-first with operational modules added around it. Odoo is an ERP where accounting is one app among many, which matters once stock, manufacturing or projects drive your numbers. For pure bookkeeping, Sage remains perfectly good.

Shyphan implements Odoo across Dublin, Cork and Galway and works with Sage systems regularly enough to know where each genuinely wins. We are not neutral - we are an Official Odoo Partner - but we would rather tell you Odoo is the wrong fit than take a project that will not succeed.

For an Irish business, the deciding factors are usually total cost over three years, how much of your process needs customisation, and whether 23% VAT returns filed to Revenue through ROS is handled properly in the standard product. We work through all three in the discovery call and put the answer in writing.

Comparison

Odoo against Sage

Where Odoo stands on the criteria that usually decide these evaluations.

CriterionHow Odoo handles itHow Sage handles it
Licence modelCommunity is free and open source; Enterprise is a per-user subscription with all apps included.Per-user subscription, and Sage 50, Sage 200 and Intacct differ sharply in price and scope.

Where this comparison is weak - and what we do about it

We implement Odoo, so we are not a neutral party and you should read this with that in mind. A vendor comparison is a starting point, not a substitute for a scored evaluation against your own requirements.

How we handle it: We will run that evaluation with you and tell you if the answer is not Odoo. That happens, and we would rather say it early.

Local compliance

What compliance in Ireland means in practice

Almost everything Irish Revenue wants arrives through ROS, and payroll arrives on or before the day people are paid. For a subsidiary of an overseas group the harder part is usually not the Irish return itself but keeping the Irish books in a shape that satisfies both Revenue and the parent's reporting calendar.

ObligationWhat the rule isWhat has to be configured
VATThe standard rate is 23 per cent, with 13.5 and 9 per cent reduced rates and a zero rate on several categories. VAT3 returns are normally bi-monthly through ROS by the 23rd, and a Return of Trading Details follows annually.Tax rules per rate and per supply type, reverse charge on intra-EU acquisitions and on construction under RCT, and a VAT3 that reconciles to the ledger without a spreadsheet in between.
PAYE ModernisationA payroll submission goes to Revenue on or before each payday, carrying PAYE, PRSI and USC for every employee. There is no annual P35.Revenue Payroll Notifications imported before each run, so employees are taxed on the credits Revenue has actually issued rather than last month's.
Relevant Contracts TaxPrincipal contractors in construction, forestry and meat processing must notify each contract and each payment to Revenue, and deduct at the rate Revenue returns.Subcontractor records that hold the RCT rate and the deduction authorisation, with payment notification built into the payment run.
Corporation tax12.5 per cent on trading income and 25 per cent on passive income, with a 15 per cent effective minimum for in-scope large groups under Pillar Two.Trading and non-trading income separated in the ledger from the start, because splitting them afterwards is where the time goes.
Companies Registration OfficeAn annual return on Form B1 within 56 days of the annual return date, with financial statements attached.Statutory accounts produced from the same ledger the management accounts come from, so the two do not have to be reconciled.
GDPRThe Data Protection Commission supervises GDPR in Ireland, and is lead supervisory authority for many of the technology companies established here.Lawful-basis and consent records held against the contact, retention applied by the system, and subject access answered from a report rather than a search of inboxes.

The filing calendar

  • Every paydayPayroll submission to Revenue through ROS
  • Bi-monthly, by the 23rdVAT3 return
  • Monthly, by the 23rdPAYE, PRSI and USC payment
  • Within 56 days of the ARDForm B1 annual return to the CRO

Who you file with

We configure the system to produce what these returns ask for, and we test it against your own transactions before go-live. We are not tax agents: your accountant or tax adviser signs the return, and rates and thresholds change, so treat this as the shape of the work rather than advice. Last reviewed 15 September 2026.

FAQ

Odoo vs Sage in Ireland - questions answered

How does PAYE Modernisation change the payroll process?
A payroll submission goes to Revenue on or before each payday, carrying PAYE, PRSI and USC for every employee, and there is no annual P35 to catch up on. The part that matters in setup is importing Revenue Payroll Notifications before each run, so people are taxed on the credits Revenue has actually issued.
Is Odoo cheaper than Sage?
On licence cost, almost always. On total cost of ownership it depends on how much customisation and integration you need, which is why we compare over three years including implementation, hosting, support and the upgrade.
When would you recommend Sage over Odoo?
When you need something Sage does genuinely better for your situation - and that does happen. We would rather lose the project at the first call than deliver something that does not fit.
Can we migrate from Sage to Odoo later?
Yes. Master data, open balances and a sensible amount of history migrate cleanly, reconciled against the source before cutover. We run these migrations regularly.
How long does an Odoo versus Sage evaluation take in Ireland?
A proper evaluation takes two to three weeks: requirements workshop, scored demo against your own scenarios, and a written recommendation. Implementation timelines only matter once you have chosen.
What does it cost to compare Odoo and Sage in Ireland?
The comparison costs nothing. If you go ahead, implementation is a fixed price in EUR and the licence is billed by the vendor you choose - which is why comparing licence prices alone is misleading.
Which option handles Irish compliance better?
Neither product ships 23% VAT returns filed to Revenue through ROS ready to use - both need configuring for it. The difference is who does that work, how long it takes and what it costs, which is the real comparison.
Will you tell us if Odoo is the wrong choice?
Yes, and we do. We are an Official Odoo Partner and a Zoho Premium Partner, so we have somewhere honest to point you either way - and sometimes the honest answer is neither.
What happens after go-live?
A free 30-day hyper-care window with daily availability, then an optional monthly AMC: a named consultant who knows your database, SLA-bound response times, a pool of included hours, verified backups and a quarterly review. Support runs on Irish time (GMT/IST), Monday to Friday, in English. Call +44 7343 086577.
