Business software built for Egypt

Egypt has one of the highest GDPs per capita in the world and is diversifying hard under Egypt Vision 2030, with sustained investment in construction, logistics, sport, tourism, financial services and technology. Companies operating onshore, inside SCZONE or the New Administrative Capital, or across all three, adopt Zoho and Odoo to run finance, sales and operations on a single system.

Why businesses in Egypt choose Shyphan

Contracting, logistics, energy services, hospitality, retail and professional services firms make up the bulk of the Egyptian private sector, and a great many of them still run on spreadsheets and disconnected tools. We put a single system in place - quotes, orders, invoices, stock and collections - without asking the team to change how they actually work.

Egypt applies no VAT today. A GCC-wide VAT has been agreed in principle but is not yet in force, so what matters now is excise tax on tobacco, energy and soft drinks, and corporate income tax at 10% on the foreign-owned share of profits - Egyptian and GCC-owned entities are largely exempt. Returns are filed with the Egyptian Tax Authority through its the ETA portal portal. We configure your finance system for the ETA portal-ready records, riyal and multi-currency working, NOSI social insurance and bilingual Arabic and English documents.

FAQ

Zoho Books vs Xero: questions answered

Is Zoho Books better than Xero?
If your practice is Xero-native and you need nothing beyond core accounting, stay with Xero. If you already run Zoho CRM, or you need landed cost and bilingual invoicing, Zoho Books is the stronger fit here.
Is Zoho Books cheaper than Xero?
Per-user pricing is broadly comparable at entry level, and diverges once you add the surrounding tools. We build a three-year total cost model in EGP covering licences, implementation and the integrations each option needs, so the comparison is arithmetic rather than assertion.
Can we migrate from Xero to Zoho Books?
Yes. We migrate Egyptian businesses from Xero regularly, with field mapping, cleansing, a sandbox dry run and a written reconciliation before the old system is retired.
What does Xero do better?
Xero has a strong app marketplace and an excellent reconciliation experience, and accountants who like it tend to like it a lot.
We already use Xero. Is it worth switching?
Only if the business case holds. If Xero is serving you and the cost difference is modest, staying put is the right answer and we will say so. The cases that justify a move are usually consolidation of several tools, licence cost at scale, or needing finance, HR and support on one platform.
Do you sell Zoho, so aren't you biased?
We are a Zoho Premium Partner, so treat this as informed rather than neutral. What we can offer is specifics: real feature comparisons, real Egypt pricing and an explicit list of where the alternative is better. We turn down bad-fit projects because they cost us more than they earn.
Do you work outside Cairo?
Yes. We deliver across Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, New Cairo, Port Said, 6th of October City, Suez and Mansoura, remotely as standard with on-site attendance in Cairo, Giza and Alexandria where the project justifies it.
Do you sign an NDA before we share our data?
Yes, as a matter of course. We also work in a sandbox with masked or sample data wherever the real thing is not needed.
Who pays the 10% corporate income tax in Egypt?
It applies to the foreign-owned share of profits. Wholly Egyptian and GCC-owned entities are largely exempt, which means a joint venture is taxed on part of its profit and not the rest. That split has to be visible in the books from day one, so we set up the entity and ownership structure before any transactions are posted rather than reconstructing it at year end.
Can you file through the ETA portal?
Filing itself stays with your tax agent, and the ETA portal is the Egyptian Tax Authority's portal they use. Our job is to make their work straightforward: a clean chart of accounts, supporting documents attached to entries, related-party transactions visible, and reports they can use directly rather than rebuild.
Do you handle NOSI payroll for Egypt?
Yes. Payroll is structured so the Wage Protection System file can be produced from the same data that drives the ledger, rather than being maintained separately in a spreadsheet, and it reconciles back to your accounts each month.
How long does implementation take?
A single-app rollout for a small team typically goes live in three to five weeks including data migration and training. Multi-entity, multi-currency or heavily automated builds run six to twelve weeks and we phase them, so the first group is working while the next is being configured. You get the timeline in writing with the fixed quote, before any work starts.
What does it cost?
Every engagement is quoted as a fixed price after a free discovery call, presented in EGP or USD to match how you budget, with the scope written down so the number does not move unless the scope does. Software licences, where any apply, are billed by the vendor directly and shown separately.

  • Honest comparison, including where Xero wins
  • Three-year cost model in EGP

  • No obligation
Who this is for

Is Zoho Books vs Xero for Egyptian businesses the right fit for you?

Zoho Books vs Xero for Egyptian businesses suits finance teams that want the ETA portal-ready books and riyal-and-dollar working without an on-premise ledger. If that is you, the licence usually pays for itself inside the first quarter. We will say so on the discovery call if it will not.

It is a poor fit if you need a heavily bespoke system with no commercial off-the-shelf equivalent, or if nobody internally can own the data. In either case we will tell you on the first call rather than after the invoice.

Local compliance

What Egypt compliance means in practice

Egypt moved further and faster on e-invoicing than most of the region. Invoices and receipts are transmitted to the Egyptian Tax Authority rather than merely kept, and an invoice the ETA has not accepted is not a deductible cost for your customer - which makes the integration a commercial issue, not just a tax one.

ObligationWhat the rule isWhat has to be configured
Value added taxThe standard rate is 14 per cent, with a schedule of table-tax rates on specific goods and services and a zero rate on exports. Returns are monthly, due by the end of the following month.Tax codes per rate and per schedule item, and a return that comes out of the ledger rather than being assembled from it.
ETA e-invoicingB2B electronic invoices must be signed and submitted to the Egyptian Tax Authority portal, and the e-receipt system covers B2C. Your customers cannot claim a cost you have not filed.Direct integration with the ETA portal, unit and item codes mapped to GS1 or EGS, and submission failures surfaced as an exception queue rather than a silent gap.
Corporate income tax22.5 per cent on taxable profits, with quarterly advance payments where they apply and an annual return.A chart of accounts that separates deductible from non-deductible spend at entry, because reclassifying a year of it is the expensive way.
Withholding taxWithholding applies to a range of local payments at rates that vary by payment type, remitted and reported quarterly.Withholding rules held against the supplier and the expense type, applied at payment.
Payroll tax and social insuranceSalary tax is withheld under a progressive scale and remitted monthly. Social insurance contributions go to the National Organization for Social Insurance on insured salary, which is not the same as gross pay.A separate insured-salary basis maintained alongside gross, so the two calculations do not fight each other.
Currency and reportingThe pound has moved sharply, and many contracts are quoted in dollars while the books are kept in pounds.Multi-currency with revaluation at period end, and a reporting currency for the parent where there is one.

The filing calendar

  • On issueE-invoice and e-receipt submission to the ETA
  • MonthlyVAT return, salary tax and social insurance
  • QuarterlyWithholding tax return, and advance corporate tax where it applies
  • AnnuallyCorporate income tax return and financial statements

Who you file with

We configure the system to produce what these returns ask for, and we test it against your own transactions before go-live. We are not tax agents: your accountant or tax adviser signs the return, and rates and thresholds change, so treat this as the shape of the work rather than advice. Last reviewed 15 September 2026.

Where Zoho Books is weak - and what we do about it

There is no manufacturing or MRP, landed-cost handling is simpler than a full ERP's, and multi-entity consolidation across different charts of accounts takes real work.

How we handle it: For manufacturers we say so at the first call and scope Odoo or a Books-plus-Inventory split instead of pretending Books will cover it.
