Zoho Projects or ClickUp: which should you buy?
If you have someone who will own configuration and enjoy it, ClickUp can do more. If you want a predictable rollout and native finance integration, Zoho Projects will cost less to run even where it costs the same to licence.
Zoho Projects is more opinionated and, for that reason, easier to roll out consistently. It also connects natively to CRM, Books and Desk, so time becomes an invoice without a third-party bridge.
ClickUp is remarkably feature-dense for the price, and highly configurable teams who invest in setting it up properly get a lot for their money.

What this choice means for a South African business
Hybrid working made the shared spreadsheet on a server share unworkable, and most South African operational systems have been rebuilt in the cloud since. Both products serve the South African market; the difference shows up in total cost, in how much configuration you need before it fits, and in how well it connects to the finance system you already run.
We advise clients in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha, East London, Bloemfontein, Mbombela, Sandton, Pietermaritzburg, Richards Bay and Midrand and across every South African region, and we are equally happy to conclude that you should stay where you are. A bad-fit implementation is worse for us than a lost sale.

What South Africa compliance means in practice
Almost everything South African SARS wants arrives through eFiling, and payroll arrives on or before the day people are paid. For a subsidiary of an overseas group the harder part is usually not the South African return itself but keeping the South African books in a shape that satisfies both SARS and the parent's reporting calendar.
| Obligation | What the rule is | What has to be configured |
|---|---|---|
| VAT | The standard rate is 23 per cent, with 13.5 and 9 per cent reduced rates and a zero rate on several categories. VAT201 returns are monthly or bi-monthly depending on turnover through eFiling by the last business day of the month, and a Return of Trading Details follows annually. | Tax rules per rate and per supply type, VAT on imported services, zero-rated exports and the correct treatment of exempt supplies, and a VAT201 that reconciles to the ledger without a spreadsheet in between. |
| PAYE with monthly EMP201 declarations | A payroll submission goes to SARS on or before each payday, carrying PAYE, UIF and SDL for every employee. There is no annual EMP501 reconciliation. | SARS tax directives imported before each run, so employees are taxed on the credits SARS has actually issued rather than last month's. |
| B-BBEE and supplier compliance | Principal contractors in construction, forestry and meat processing must notify each contract and each payment to SARS, and deduct at the rate SARS returns. | Supplier records that hold the VAT registration number, B-BBEE certificate and payment terms, with remittance advice built in.to the payment run. |
| Corporation tax | 12.5 per cent on trading income and 25 per cent on passive income, with a 15 per cent effective minimum for in-scope large groups under Pillar Two. | Trading and non-trading income separated in the ledger from the start, because splitting them afterwards is where the time goes. |
| Companies and Intellectual Property Commission | An annual return on CIPC annual return within 56 days of the annual return date, with financial statements attached. | Statutory accounts produced from the same ledger the management accounts come from, so the two do not have to be reconciled. |
| POPIA | The the Information Regulator supervises POPIA in South Africa, and is lead supervisory authority for many of the technology companies established here. | Lawful-basis and consent records held against the contact, retention applied by the system, and subject access answered from a report rather than a search of inboxes. |

We configure the system to produce what these returns ask for, and we test it against your own transactions before go-live. We are not tax agents: your accountant or tax adviser signs the return, and rates and thresholds change, so treat this as the shape of the work rather than advice. Last reviewed 15 September 2026.
