Why Shyphan

How we approach a Bolt-style build

  • Business model interrogated before the feature list
  • A first version scoped to one journey, not the full product
  • Fixed price in ZAR per phase so runway is plannable
  • iOS, Android and the admin console nobody remembers to budget for
  • Source code, store accounts and infrastructure in your ownership
What it takes

What an app like Bolt actually involves

Bolt started as ride hailing and became a super app spanning rides, delivery, payments and more. The engineering that looks hard, maps and tracking, is largely solved. What is genuinely hard is supply: getting enough drivers online in the right places at the right times, and the pricing and incentive logic that keeps them there.

A credible first version needs a rider app, a captain app, a dispatch and matching engine, live tracking, fare calculation, payments and an operations console. Everything beyond that is a later phase, and treating it that way is the difference between launching and running out of money at eighty per cent complete.

We will also tell you when the answer is not to build. If the market is served, the unit economics do not work, or the operational side is the real barrier, that is worth hearing before the budget is committed rather than after.

Bolt-style products built for the South African market

We build for founders and corporate teams in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha, East London, Bloemfontein and Midrand, with accessible, WCAG-tested interfaces, regional payment gateways and the delivery and logistics integrations this market actually uses.

South African VAT at 5%, Corporate Tax above the ZAR 375,000 threshold and the phased e-invoicing programme have pushed businesses towards systems that produce compliant documents by default. That shapes what a first version should contain far more than any feature comparison with Bolt does.

Most clients look at these next: Build an App Like Airbnb in South Africa, Build an App Like Amazon in South Africa and Build an App Like Mr D in South Africa.

What we deliver

How we build a Bolt-style product

Model first, prototype second, build in phases, each priced as a fixed sum in ZAR.

01

Model and scope workshop

We pull apart the business model before the feature list, because the hard part of a Bolt-style product is rarely the software.

02

Clickable prototype

The core journey as a prototype you can hand to real users before committing to a build budget.

03

Customer and provider apps

iOS and Android built from one codebase, with the second-side app or web console the model needs.

04

Admin and operations console

The part nobody demos and everybody needs: onboarding, disputes, pricing, payouts and support tooling.

05

Launch and iterate

Store submission, analytics from day one, and a roadmap driven by what users actually do.

Local compliance

What South Africa compliance means in practice

Almost everything South African SARS wants arrives through eFiling, and payroll arrives on or before the day people are paid. For a subsidiary of an overseas group the harder part is usually not the South African return itself but keeping the South African books in a shape that satisfies both SARS and the parent's reporting calendar.

ObligationWhat the rule isWhat has to be configured
VATThe standard rate is 23 per cent, with 13.5 and 9 per cent reduced rates and a zero rate on several categories. VAT201 returns are monthly or bi-monthly depending on turnover through eFiling by the last business day of the month, and a Return of Trading Details follows annually.Tax rules per rate and per supply type, VAT on imported services, zero-rated exports and the correct treatment of exempt supplies, and a VAT201 that reconciles to the ledger without a spreadsheet in between.
PAYE with monthly EMP201 declarationsA payroll submission goes to SARS on or before each payday, carrying PAYE, UIF and SDL for every employee. There is no annual EMP501 reconciliation.SARS tax directives imported before each run, so employees are taxed on the credits SARS has actually issued rather than last month's.
B-BBEE and supplier compliancePrincipal contractors in construction, forestry and meat processing must notify each contract and each payment to SARS, and deduct at the rate SARS returns.Supplier records that hold the VAT registration number, B-BBEE certificate and payment terms, with remittance advice built in.to the payment run.
Corporation tax12.5 per cent on trading income and 25 per cent on passive income, with a 15 per cent effective minimum for in-scope large groups under Pillar Two.Trading and non-trading income separated in the ledger from the start, because splitting them afterwards is where the time goes.
Companies and Intellectual Property CommissionAn annual return on CIPC annual return within 56 days of the annual return date, with financial statements attached.Statutory accounts produced from the same ledger the management accounts come from, so the two do not have to be reconciled.
POPIAThe the Information Regulator supervises POPIA in South Africa, and is lead supervisory authority for many of the technology companies established here.Lawful-basis and consent records held against the contact, retention applied by the system, and subject access answered from a report rather than a search of inboxes.

The filing calendar

  • Every paydayPayroll submission to SARS through eFiling
  • Bi-monthly, by the 23rdVAT201 return
  • Monthly, by the 23rdPAYE, UIF and SDL payment
  • Within 30 business days of the anniversary dateannual return to the CIPC

We configure the system to produce what these returns ask for, and we test it against your own transactions before go-live. We are not tax agents: your accountant or tax adviser signs the return, and rates and thresholds change, so treat this as the shape of the work rather than advice. Last reviewed 15 September 2026.

FAQ

Building an app like Bolt: questions answered

How does PAYE with monthly EMP201 declarations change the payroll process?
A monthly EMP201 declaration goes to SARS by the 7th of the following month, carrying PAYE, UIF and SDL for every employee, and the EMP501 reconciliation with IRP5 certificates is submitted twice a year. The part that matters in setup is correct tax tables, UIF and SDL rules and IRP5 source codes, so the reconciliation matches what was actually paid.
How much does it cost to build an app like Bolt in South Africa?
There is no honest single number, because Bolt as it exists today is years of engineering. What we quote is a first version with the core journey working, priced as fixed phases in ZAR after a discovery session. That is a real number you can plan around, unlike a headline figure.
How long would a first version take?
Typically three to six months for a credible first release covering the core loop, on iOS, Android and an admin console. Payments, dispatch logic and scale come in later phases once the core is proven.
What is genuinely hard about this kind of app?
The engineering that looks hard, maps and tracking, is largely solved. What is genuinely hard is supply: getting enough drivers online in the right places at the right times, and the pricing and incentive logic that keeps them there.
Do we need our own delivery fleet or supply?
That is usually the real question, and it is a business one rather than a technical one. The software is buildable; the operational side of supply, drivers, merchants or inventory is what determines whether the model works. We will say so plainly at the discovery stage.
Can we start smaller?
Almost always yes, and we will push for it. One city, one category, one customer journey, launched and measured. Most failed marketplace builds we are asked to rescue launched with three sides of the market and no traction on any.
Who owns the app?
You do. Source code, repositories, store accounts and cloud infrastructure are in your name from the start.
Can you work in English as well as English?
Yes. We deliver training and documentation in either language and build bilingual templates, forms and portals where your customers or staff need English.
Can we speak to a reference client?
Yes. After the discovery call we will introduce you to a client of comparable size and sector wherever we have one who has agreed to act as a reference.
What happens if we want to leave?
Everything lives in your own Zoho account. Documentation, admin credentials and a handover period are part of the agreement, so there is no lock-in to us.
Do you build POPIA-compliant software for South African companies?
Yes. Every build includes consent capture, purpose limitation, data minimisation, encryption at rest and in transit, access logging and a data-subject request flow, so the application supports your obligations under POPIA and the Information Regulator.
Which South African payment gateways can you integrate?
PayFast, Yoco, Ozow, Peach Payments, PayGate, SnapScan and Payflex, plus DebiCheck debit orders and EFT verification, all priced and reconciled in ZAR.
Where do you host applications for South African clients?
AWS Cape Town (af-south-1) or Azure South Africa North for data residency, with CDN edge caching for Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, and load-shedding-aware design: offline-first mobile screens, queued sync and resilient background jobs.

Thinking about an app like Bolt?

Book a free discovery call. We will pressure-test the model, tell you what a realistic first version is, and quote it as fixed phases in ZAR.

  • Model interrogated before features

  • Fixed quote in ZAR per phase

Where custom development is weak - and what we do about it

Bespoke software costs more than configuring a product and you own it forever, including the maintenance. If an off-the-shelf tool covers 80% of the need, building from scratch is usually the wrong call.

How we handle it: We say so at the first call, even when it means a smaller project - and we scope the 20% as a configuration or integration job instead.
