- Best suited to
- Teams in Egypt running a genuine evaluation who want total cost over three years rather than a licence-price comparison.

Odoo vs Katana in Egypt
Odoo vs Katana: the short version is that Katana is a focused manufacturing MRP for small makers, and it is genuinely easier to start with than Odoo. It is not an ERP: accounting, purchasing depth, CRM and projects live elsewhere and need integrating. Odoo is more work to set up and covers the whole business.
Shyphan implements Odoo across Cairo, Alexandria and Giza and works with Katana systems regularly enough to know where each genuinely wins. We are not neutral - we are an Official Odoo Partner - but we would rather tell you Odoo is the wrong fit than take a project that will not succeed.
For an Egyptian business, the deciding factors are usually total cost over three years, how much of your process needs customisation, and whether 14% VAT returns filed with the Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA) is handled properly in the standard product. We work through all three in the discovery call and put the answer in writing.

Odoo against Katana
Where Odoo stands on the criteria that usually decide these evaluations.
| Criterion | How Odoo handles it | How Katana handles it |
|---|---|---|
| Licence model | Community is free and open source; Enterprise is a per-user subscription with all apps included. | Per-user subscription, cheap to start and priced for small makers. |
| Time to configure | Most changes are configuration in Studio, so a field or report change is a same-day task. | Very quick. You can be running in days, which is genuinely its strength. |
| Manufacturing & stock | Bills of material, work orders, landed cost and lot traceability are in the base suite. | Good live MRP for small-batch manufacturing, but no work-order routings, costing depth or quality module. |
| Customisation | Studio for configuration, Python modules for logic; you own the code. | Very limited. You adapt to Katana; there is no framework to extend it. |
| Hosting | Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or your own infrastructure, including in-country hosting. | Katana cloud only. |
| Ecosystem | A large third-party app store and a wide partner network for continuity. | Small, and it assumes QuickBooks or Xero alongside it for accounting. |

Where this comparison is weak - and what we do about it
We implement Odoo, so we are not a neutral party and you should read this with that in mind. A vendor comparison is a starting point, not a substitute for a scored evaluation against your own requirements.
How we handle it: We will run that evaluation with you and tell you if the answer is not Odoo. That happens, and we would rather say it early.
What compliance in Egypt means in practice
Egypt moved further and faster on e-invoicing than most of the region. Invoices and receipts are transmitted to the Egyptian Tax Authority rather than merely kept, and an invoice the ETA has not accepted is not a deductible cost for your customer - which makes the integration a commercial issue, not just a tax one.
| Obligation | What the rule is | What has to be configured |
|---|---|---|
| Value added tax | The standard rate is 14 per cent, with a schedule of table-tax rates on specific goods and services and a zero rate on exports. Returns are monthly, due by the end of the following month. | Tax codes per rate and per schedule item, and a return that comes out of the ledger rather than being assembled from it. |
| ETA e-invoicing | B2B electronic invoices must be signed and submitted to the Egyptian Tax Authority portal, and the e-receipt system covers B2C. Your customers cannot claim a cost you have not filed. | Direct integration with the ETA portal, unit and item codes mapped to GS1 or EGS, and submission failures surfaced as an exception queue rather than a silent gap. |
| Corporate income tax | 22.5 per cent on taxable profits, with quarterly advance payments where they apply and an annual return. | A chart of accounts that separates deductible from non-deductible spend at entry, because reclassifying a year of it is the expensive way. |
| Withholding tax | Withholding applies to a range of local payments at rates that vary by payment type, remitted and reported quarterly. | Withholding rules held against the supplier and the expense type, applied at payment. |
| Payroll tax and social insurance | Salary tax is withheld under a progressive scale and remitted monthly. Social insurance contributions go to the National Organization for Social Insurance on insured salary, which is not the same as gross pay. | A separate insured-salary basis maintained alongside gross, so the two calculations do not fight each other. |
| Currency and reporting | The pound has moved sharply, and many contracts are quoted in dollars while the books are kept in pounds. | Multi-currency with revaluation at period end, and a reporting currency for the parent where there is one. |

We configure the system to produce what these returns ask for, and we test it against your own transactions before go-live. We are not tax agents: your accountant or tax adviser signs the return, and rates and thresholds change, so treat this as the shape of the work rather than advice. Last reviewed 15 September 2026.
